Green Raiteros:

WHAT IS GREEN RAITEROS?

Enhanced mobility option that increases access to essential services for our community members.

An indigenous rural ridesharing service for individuals who enjoy their independence and value their time.  Based in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, Green Raiteros provides transportation to non-emergency medical and other essential appointments to various destinations, principally located in Fresno, Madera, Kings and Kern Counties.  The GREEN Raiteros operations is based in Huron, CA at the Romualdo M. Leon & Imelda C. Leon Community Mobility Center.

Clean Mobility for Healthy People & Planet!

Green Raiteros, the nation’s first ever EV rideshare service, is a community-based concept that revolutionizes mobility for rural communities. Changing the paradigm from an individual’s need to own a vehicle to a community owning a fleet.  This program builds upon an existing informal network existent in geographically isolated rural areas initiated by local retired farmworkers. Spearheaded by long time environmental justice advocate, community empowerment thought leader, innovator and Huron native, Rey León. This amazing program was launched by the uncanny partnership between veteran community Raiteros, The LEAP Institute, EVgo, California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), The Schmidt Family Foundation-11th Hour Project, The California Endowment and continues to gain support from General Motors, California Air Resources Board (CARB), California Workforce Development Board (CWDB) and the California Energy Commission (CEC).

This service helps community achieve equity & justice in five primary areas: Transportation, Health, Environment, Climate, and Economy (including workforce development, employment and educational advancement).

OUR PRINCIPLES:

VALUE – To improve access to quality healthcare and enhance community health.

SERVICE – A quality service for farmworker families and other essential workers.

RESPONSIVE – To meet community need on a daily basis.

RESILIENT – A community indigenous ingenuity in partnership with public and private entities.

INNOVATION – We build on what works with bleeding edge approaches and technologies.

The location of the operations & maintenance headquarters in Huron is instrumental in showcasing the innovative resiliency of this rural ridesharing service with ten level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers.

Additionally, the Green Raiteros program will soon count on four DC Fast chargers helping maintain Huron’s status as the city with the most EV chargers per capita in the country.  In 2018, working with corporate partner EVgo, LEAP installed 2 DC fast chargers on the West Side of the City of Fresno to solidify an EV charging thorough way for the Green Raitero EV Fleet while supporting efforts to improve access to EV’s and showcase their benefits in rural areas. Green Raiteros’ parent, The LEAP Institute will continue to advocate for more EV infrastructure in Fresno County and the San Joaquin Valley as well as work with partners to support the affordable acquisition of EV’s by farmworker families. Effectively, The LEAP Institute, through Green Raiteros will inspire the movement to grow a culture of smart clean car drivers in a region where the air has been heavily compromised by dirty transportation options. Good health begins with clean cars, a mobility infrastructure for the most vulnerable to access their essential appointments to maintain good health and other innovation solutions with technology for equity. Clean the air, reduce greenhouse gasses, build community and strengthen economy are core to this effort.
